When was the last time you truly breathed? Not just shallow, automatic breaths to keep you going, but the kind of deep, grounding breaths that make you feel safe inside your own body?
So often, we move through our days holding our breath while rushing from one moment to the next, shoulders tight, mind racing. Without realizing it, we teach our bodies to live in a state of tension. But deep within us, there’s an ancient truth our body never forgets, and that's our breath is medicine.
Your Breath Knows the Way Back to Peace
The breath is our built-in healer. It connects us to life itself, balancing our nervous system and helping us return to the present moment. When we take deep, intentional breaths, we send a powerful signal to the body that says, “You’re safe now. You can let go.”
In Reiki and energy work, breath is what moves energy through the body. It clears blocks, releases stagnation, and helps emotions rise to the surface so they can finally be released. The simple act of breathing deeply can reset your entire energetic field — bringing you back into balance, clarity, and peace.
Think of your breath as a bridge that connects between your body and your spirit, your thoughts and your truth, your chaos and your calm. Every inhale fills you with life force energy. Every exhale releases what no longer serves you.
How Deep Breathing Heals
When you breathe slowly and deeply, a few incredible things happen inside your body:
- Your heart rate lowers, signaling to your brain that you’re safe.
- Your muscles relax, releasing stored tension and emotional energy.
- Your mind quiets, creating space for intuition and clarity.
- Your energy field balances, aligning your vibration with peace.
It’s not magic, it’s mindfulness. It’s the sacred dance between your mind and your body, remembering how to be in harmony again.
Try This Simple Healing Breath Practice
Here’s one of my favorite techniques that I often share with my coaching and Reiki clients - it’s a beautiful way to ground, calm, and realign your energy anytime you need it:
- Find a quiet space. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and allow your shoulders to drop.
- Place one hand on your heart and the other on your belly. Feel your body beneath your palms - alive, steady, and safe.
- Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4. Feel your belly rise, your chest expand.
- Hold your breath for a moment — just long enough to feel the stillness between the inhale and exhale.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6. Imagine releasing any heaviness, stress, or emotion that doesn’t belong to you.
- Repeat for 3 to 5 minutes. Let each round of breath take you deeper into calm, deeper into presence.
You can pair this practice with Reiki self-healing, affirmations, or visualization. Imagine each inhale as warm, golden light filling your body, and each exhale as dark smoke leaving — taking your tension with it.
Another great breathing technique that you can practice in a pinch is taking two short breaths in and one long exhale out. This breathing technique is my go-to method when my own anxiety takes over my nervous system. I like this simple practice because it can be done anywhere, at anytime and is an effective and practical way to intention and powerful way to connect your breath with your body at any given moment.
The Breath as a Portal for Transformation
Deep breathing isn’t just about relaxation — it’s about reconnection. It brings you home to yourself, softens the mind’s chatter, and opens space for healing energy to flow freely again. When combined with mindset work and Reiki, it becomes a powerful tool for transformation — helping you release what’s heavy and realign with who you truly are.
So the next time you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in your thoughts — pause and take a breath.
Let your inhale remind you that you are here. Let your exhale remind you that you are safe. And in that sacred rhythm, you’ll find your way back to your peace.
Cheers,
Jo <3
