When we hear the words self-care, many of us picture candles, spa days, or a quiet cup of tea, and don’t get me wrong, I love all of those things, but self-care is so much deeper than that.
True self-care is mindset work. It’s about the intentional choices we make that shape how we show up in our lives, our families, and our communities. Recently I was reflecting on the different types of self-care, and I was reminded how beautifully layered it really is. When we broaden our understanding of care, we move from reacting to burnout, to building resilience and self-worth every single day. Let’s explore these eight dimensions together, not as a checklist, but as invitations.
Physical Self-Care — Honouring Your Energy
This is where many of us start: nourishment, movement, rest. But from a mindset perspective, physical care is about listening instead of pushing. Ask yourself: What is my body asking for today? Am I fueling myself or running on empty? Physical care is an act of self-respect, and a reminder that your wellbeing matters.
Mental Self-Care — Rewriting the Inner Dialogue
Our thoughts shape our reality. Mental self-care means choosing curiosity over criticism. This might look like: Practicing mindfulness, challenging your limiting beliefs, and speaking to yourself like someone you love. Mindset isn’t about “positive thinking” , it’s about conscious thinking.
Emotional Self-Care — Making Space for Feeling
Emotions aren’t problems to fix, they’re messages to understand. Emotional care might include: Journaling honestly, naming your triggers, and practicing gratitude. When we allow ourselves to feel fully, we strengthen our emotional intelligence and compassion, both for ourselves and others.
Spiritual Self-Care — Connecting to Meaning
Spiritual care is deeply personal. It’s about connection, whether that’s through meditation, Reiki, prayer, nature, or stillness. This type of care invites us to ask ourselves: What grounds me? What reminds me who I am beyond my roles? It’s where our purpose meets our peace.
Intellectual Self-Care — Feeding Curiosity
Growth fuels confidence! Learning something new, exploring hobbies, or engaging in meaningful conversation keeps our minds alive and expanding. This is self-care through empowerment, reminding yourself that evolution never stops.
Environmental Self-Care — Creating Supportive Spaces
Our surroundings affect our mindset more than we realize. Small acts matter: Tidying a corner, bringing light into a room, creating safety and calm. Your environment should support your energy, not drain it.
Social Self-Care — Protecting and Nurturing Connection
Connection is essential, but so are boundaries. Social care means: Investing in relationships that uplift us, saying no when needed, and asking for support. Healthy connections strengthens resilience and belonging.
Financial Self-Care — Building Stability and Confidence
Money is emotional. It’s psychological. It’s mindset! Financial care includes: Budget awareness, planning ahead, and reducing avoidance around our finances. This isn’t about perfection, it’s about empowerment and security.
A Final Reflection
Self-care isn’t one action. It’s a lifestyle rooted in self-worth. When we approach self-care through mindset, we stop asking ourselves "what should i do?" and start asking ourselves "What do I need to honour myself today?" So here’s my invitation to you, pause for a moment and reflect on which type of self-care have you been nurturing lately, and which one might need more of your attention.
Growth doesn’t come from doing everything at once. It comes from showing up with awareness, compassion, and intention, one choice at a time. You are worthy of care in every dimension of your life. Let's intentionally choose to never forget that.
Cheers,
Coach Jo 💗
